Pondering the way forward

I feel like I have been here before, thinking about my future and how it will go forward.

I seem to have an interesting mix of skills; combined with my 30 ish years of experience as a structural engineer I have amassed qualifications in Hypnotherapy, sports hypnosis, massage therapy, NLP, gait analysis, coaching and worked for British Cycling Performance Team as Handcycle Coach in the run up to the London 2012 Olympics.

As ever, I'm looking for a way to make a living that suits my lifestyle and skills, making the most effective contribution to society I can. I could be embarrassed to admit that my previous work was in defence research and is currently in offshore oil and gas. I am not, however, in that the defence research I felt took tax payers money and developed technology with direct application to civilian safety and I think it would be a very naive person to believe we can live without extracting oil and gas for sometime into the future. The ethical point as I see it is to minimise the use of such valuable commodities...

I have had lots of thoughts and followed what have appeared to be some dead ends. I'll talk about them more next time.

There is some appeal in continuing to work in the offshore field and spend the rest of my time running and cycling - an experience I enjoyed immensely towards the end of this summer in the French Alps. I may yet do that and indeed it seems the most viable option. Here's a picture of my motorhome on the Saint Bernard Pass between Italy and Switzerland.

On the other hand, working with people is a great thing and the pleasure I get in helping others is immense... as is sharing others' journeys, providing support where I can. I suppose I often find myself doing this in a varying degrees in my life as an engineer but the development of the human directly is perhaps more enjoyable than doing so as a by product of an engineering project.

So this represents the start of an attempt to do some blogs and follow my interests... you can look at my Facebook page and/or my Twits and see how things go - all comments, however unsettling, will gratefully received and although this may the first of one blog, I hope it will be the first of many and the start of a journey of valuable human interaction.

Thanks for reading and please leave a comment and follow if you want to.
